Saturday February 15th: Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center (1957 S Spaulding Ave, Chicago, IL 60623 phone: (773) 542-9126) will be hosting an opening reception for "Women's HerStory: Women's Contributions to History" from 1 to 4pm. The Liz Long gallery is open on Saturdays from 11am - 4pm through March 29th.
Here is an excerpt from my contribution to the exhibit:
"[Some of the paintings] depict the personal interactions of a young couple in the transitional era of the late 1960s. According to the current popular conceptions of that time, whether strictly factual or mythic, this was a juncture where women as a whole were given the right (if not implied imperative) of personal choice over the destiny of their lives and their own conceptions of self. The snapshot images that served as a starting ground for my paintings, while somewhat at odds with the historical narrative of personal choice, are significant of typical stories of that time. The canvases derived from them evolve the discussion into a purer argument recognizing the springing forth of an undercurrent of (continuing) dominance and submission wrought in starker terms through the use of raw color and abstracted form. This interplay of style and manner of application to canvas evidences the conscious choice of women in general of that period to rattle the chains of traditional submission. It also evidences my view of a period of time I did not live through but know of only through the stories of others."

I am pleased to share my work in the Oak Park Art League (720 Chicago Ave., Oak Park, IL) exhibition "Body Language" which opened February 7th. The show continues through March 7th with afternoon hours every day except Sunday.

I painted this the morning after my cousin Greg Sturtz died in a car accident. He was just a month older than me.
The first painting in what became a series, started around the time of my fifth wedding anniversary.
